Rory McIlroy needs a green jacket to become just the sixth men’s golfer to complete the career grand slam, and he’s putting himself in a great position to win his first Masters on moving day.
McIlroy was solid over his first two rounds, posting scores of 69 and 71, but began his third round trailing leader Patrick Reed by five strokes. By mid day on Saturday, McIlroy was in a tie for second.
Playing alongside Dustin Johnson, McIlroy began his round with two steady pars. After a perfect drive at the third, McIlroy left himself a tricky birdie putt – but he buried it.

McIlroy grabbed a share of the lead at the par-5 eighth, holing out from off the green for eagle. If McIlroy hadn’t jarred the shot, it would have likely left him with a long birdie putt.
